As a consumer impacted by disability, our needs will vary from person to person or from family to family. For some, it may be reliability to make it to a doctor’s appointment. For others, it is that first accessible cross-country trip for a teenage son.

Whether it is driving across town to make it on time to work or take that summer vacation, there are consistent points that make a reliable vehicle: quality, customer service, and attention to detail.

It is an easy assumption to think that people with disabilities only need a vehicle to make it to their next medical appointment. On the contrary… style, comfort, and personality are all important aspects of finding an accessible vehicle that is the perfect fit.

When purchasing an accessible vehicle, below are some must ask questions:

  1. What type of accessible vehicle will service my specific needs?
  2. What type of accessible conversions or adaptations do you provide?
  3. What are the service capabilities and where is the nearest repair center?
  4. What are your crash ratings?
  5. How does your service staff handle complains or issues on the road?
  6. Are you an accredited dealer or part of the NMEDA?
  7. What kinds of financing options are available?

Consider your short term and long term accessibility needs. For example, if you are a family, a child who has a disability will have different mobility needs as they grow into an adult. Considerations may be navigating in an out independently, hand controls, or other features.

Don’t be afraid to take a vehicle for a test drive. It’s always important to make sure you feel comfortable driving an accessible vehicle, whether it is for yourself or a family member.

More than anything, a person with a disability wants to find a brand or dealer they can trust.

In a recent Dealer Service Technician Study, MARTEC, and independent consulting and research firm, conducted a survey of 100 randomly selected mobility technicians from across the United States.

BraunAbility was listed as one of the top accessible vehicle conversion by technicians, bypassing other conversion models. Respondents found that BraunAbility builds the best product, is the most reliable, highest safety equipment, highest safety design, best OEM chassis integration, engineered with the greatest attention to detail, and fewest consumer complaints.
